David Karp: How School Drop-Out Built $800 Million Empire with Tumblr

There are many free blogging services that are available in cyberspace. One of these platforms are now on the rise is a Tumblr. Blogging platforms that can be accessed through www.tumblr.com was created by a young man who was then aged 21 years, David Karp.

* David Karp, an entrepreneur living in New York City, is widely known for his founding the microblogging platform and social networking website called Tumblr in the early 2007  and serves over 12.5 Billion pageviews each month. Previously, David was the Chief Technology Officer of UrbanBaby.com. 

Karp is the figure of a young boy who is full of surprises. When he was 15 years old he decided to quit formal schooling at Bronx Science High School and chose to undergo a program message board. The age of 17 years he worked as head of technology at UrbanBaby, the service via email and message board for parents who are based in New York. 

At one point, desperate Karp went to Japan and renting an apartment with a pre-paid system. He lived in Japan for five months, without the knowledge of colleagues and bosses at UrbanBaby. They found out that Karp was not in New York after he was not present in an important meeting.

Karp is the young who are not pleasure-loving. When CNET purchased UrbanBaby in 2006, this young boy who was born in July 6,1986 has enough money to start a business.

Karp then founded a consulting company and introduce DavidVille Tumblr, negblog platform is touted as a blend of Facebook and Twitter. Tumblr inspired Tumbleog, format blog that allows posting in short form, and can integrate various types.

If Facebook is the social network for online identification and authentication, and Twitter is for communication, Tumblr fulfils a different role: self-expression. Users can upload seven types of media -- text, photos, quotes, links, dialogue, audio, video -- from one button on their dashboard and push it to their public-facing tumblelog. These blogs can be designed however a user wants, or dressed in a "theme" (the most popular theme, Redux, has three million users). Tumblr is extremely easy to use as a free-form blogging platform, but has also developed into its own social network.

The idea of ​​forming Tumblr came when Karp feel there is a void when blogging on Blogger, WordPress, and Type Pad. Karp did not feel was not successfully create an online identity as desired. Once, in 2005 he found a tumblelog called Projectionist when users combine different media in a blog. Projectionist's Karp rate as the solution that he does not find in WordPress, because it can incorporate a variety of media such as videos and images in a pretty theme. David Karp was 19 when he founded Tumblr .

Karp’s contribution at the early age earned him fame and honors. He has been called one of the world’s top 35 innovators under the age of 35 in 2010 by the MIT Technology Review TR35 and the Best Young Tech Entrepreneur 2009 by BusinessWeek.

By the reports of 2012 January 5, Tumblr has more than 39.5 million blogs. In 2011, according to comScore, Tumblr had approximately 13.4 million unique visitors in the U.S. only. As of August 2011, Tumbler was valued at $800 million.
